“What do we do now?” Emma asked Dirk as they left the fast-food restaurant where they’d just eaten breakfast and headed for their vehicle.

“Let’s head back to headquarters,” he said. “We can get a live update from Harlan and Weasel and use some of the resources there to do some fresh research ourselves.”

Exactly what kind of research he hoped to do, Dirk wasn’t sure. From Professor Nichols, they had only gleaned new questions, and what they needed were some answers. But he did feel an urge to check in with the two computer experts in person, to delve a bit into their conversations and theories. He wanted to observe their interactions, to uncover any hidden motives or agendas that the platform owner might be pressing on the Agency’s chief digital geek.

As the wheels of their unmarked sedan hummed against the asphalt, he glanced over at his partner. The interior of the car was bathed in a soft morning light that filtered through the tinted windows, casting a gentle glow on her young face. Soon, they began talking again about this case that had coaxed Dirk out of his uneasy retirement, but their discussion was interrupted by the shrill ringtone of Dirk’s cell phone.

“King,” he answered with a rasp that matched the gravel beneath their booth.

“Agent King, this is Officer Hale. We’ve got a situation,” the voice on the other end said, urgency cutting through the static and promising a change of plans.

“Go ahead,” Dirk replied, his posture tensing into readiness.

“New victim. Possible abduction during a live stream, or maybe something worse. We’ve traced the location.” The address that followed was unfamiliar, but the implications sent a familiar jolt of adrenaline surging through Dirk’s veins.

“Understood. We’re on our way.” Dirk ended the call.

The address was in Arlington, Virginia, the county south of D.C. that was one of the several upscale residential areas clustered around the capital city. They were still in Maryland, but they could get south to the Arlington location in half an hour if they ran with the siren on. Neither Dirk nor Emma spoke for a few moments, with only the siren’s cry filling the space between them.

“Another victim,” Emma finally said, her voice full of regret and bitterness.

Dirk knew exactly how she felt. They’d apparently failed to save the killer’s next intended victim.

“This has got to stop,” he growled under his breath.
